Fibroid Surgery

Considering Fibroid Surgery?

Around 75 percent of women worldwide develop fibroids, also known as leiomyomata, at some point in their lives. Fibroids are non-cancerous and most women aren’t even aware that they have them because they don’t present any symptoms. Fibroids are found within the uterine walls and range in diameter from about pea sized, to as big as a grapefruit. Sometimes fibroids cause a change in the size or shape of the uterus and this can result in several unpleasant symptoms, including very heavy and/or painful periods. Which are generally indications that fibroid surgery may be needed.

Fibroid Surgery Types

Many of the women that do suffer from painful or heavy periods decide that the fibroid surgery risks are worth it and they opt for a myomectomy or even a hysterectomy in order to address them. However, fibroid surgery recovery time from these two procedures is rather lengthy, and quite painful at times. Other key factors to keep in mind is the cost of fibroid surgery as well as fibroid surgery after effects, which can both be costly with these two options.

However, hundreds of thousands of women each year are finding that there is fibroid treatment without surgery available, known as Uterine Fibroid Embolisation, or UFE. UFE is carried out in a controlled medical environment with a professional interventional radiologist, where the doctor uses images to guide the procedure. During the UFE a small, thin catheter is inserted into the radial artery of one of your wrists and then advanced into the blood vessels that supply the uterus. Tiny particles are then injected through the catheter into the small arteries that supply the adenomyosis within the uterus and they starve the adenomyosis of its nutrient and oxygen supply and as the muscle of the uterus heals, the fibroid disappears.

Fibroid Surgery and Pregnancy

Generally speaking, only fibroids that impact the endometrial cavity have any affect on fertility, with the exception of cases where multiple fibroids cause abnormal uterine contraction patterns or large fibroids that obstruct the fallopian tubes. Uterine fibroid surgery should be discussed with your doctor if you are undergoing or are planning on starting fertility treatment as the hormones have been shown to increase the size of fibroids in some women.

Fibroid Surgery After-Care & Recovery Time

With a hysterectomy you can expect a 2 to 3 day stay in the hospital, during which the pain will be the most intense. Constipation is common due to the surgery and pain medications, and in the beginning you can expect vaginal bleeding that can persist for up to 6 weeks. Recovery time is a full 6 weeks, including leave from work for the entire time, and nothing should go be inserted into the vagina during that time.

Myomectomy generally will require at least an overnight stay in the hospital but if the open procedure is performed, your stay will be a few days. Depending on which type of myomectomy you have, you will need pain medication for at least 24 hours. The recovery time varies but will be from 2 to 6 weeks and you can expect spotting for up to 6 weeks and you cannot have intercourse during the recovery time.

At the Fibroid Treatment Clinic, you can have a permanent solution with a single overnight stay in the hospital with the UFE. There is no scarring from the procedure and it is much safer than traditional surgery, meaning that  you’ll enjoy a quicker recovery time too. Performing this procedure worldwide for over 30 years, The Fibroid Treatment Clinic has treated more than 200,000 women with varying degrees of fibroid complications.
